Welcome to my page! Thats me to the left doing what I love to do...being outdoors that is. I've been fortunate enough to live in New England, North Carolina, and the North Woods of Michigan. I presently live near Sault Ste. Marie in Michigan's beautiful Upper Peninsula with my wife Angie and my two boys Alex and Chris.

Hiking is what I live for but I also enjoy touring historical sites or just travelling for no better reason than to see something new. Lighthouses and waterfalls are some of my favorite things to explore...likely because they are so darn photogenic! Most of my recent trips (2007-Present)center around the Upper Great Lakes while earlier years (2005-2006) I spent wandering the mountains of western North Carolina. I like to get out and about as much as I can though, so its hard telling where I'll end up next!

Hope you enjoy looking around!

Thompson Harbor State Park, MI (1-21-10) : Thompson Harbor, located east of Rogers City, is one of those rare undeveloped jewels of the Michigan State Park system. Formerly a busy shipping harbor, Thompson's Harbor has now been completely reclaimed by nature. It's a wonder that I hadn't visited this place yet as it has quite a reputation for its wildflower displays in the spring.

I had, in fact, been eyeing this place for a hike since the beginning of winter and had been waiting for a nice clear day to visit. Alas, clear winter days in northern Michigan are fleeting and I felt I had waited long enough. Of the 6+ miles of trails in the park I covered about 4 on this loop. Despite the clouds, I managed to have a rather good time...

Osborn Preserve, Sugar Island, MI (12-16-09) : The Osborn Preserve is located on the southeastern shore of Sugar Island which is squeezed between mainland Michigan at Sault Ste. Marie and Ontario. The preserve itself is quite large, encompassing some 3,000 acres, and is managed by the University of Michigan which utilizes it for biological research. I had long planned to go see for myself what the preserve had to offer and this rather snowy day presented itself as my first good opportunity to go.

Like I said the preserve is at the southeast end of Sugar Island. Due to recent snowfall I couldn't make it all the way in to the trailhead but rather had to park about a quarter mile or so away. Without a map (a rather simple and stupid mistake on my part) I really didn't know where I was going to end up but I did have a somewhat vague mental map of the island so I figured I'd be all right. I was hoping to circumnavigate the island or at the very least reach its northern tip. As it turned out I got really close, the constant haze of snow kept me from accurately sighting landmarks but comparing my pics to maps I now have I believe I turned back only a few hundred yards short. Nevertheless, the hike was wonderful. Any chance I can get out in a woodland coated in a thick, fresh mantle of snow I'll take as it always makes for a magical and memorable experience. So, I heartily invite you to take a few minutes and join me out in the snow!!
