This is the hike I had been dreaming of my whole life. I hope these albums capture in some way the beauty of this unique place and the love that I quickly developed for it. The seven day hike took us around the eastern half of the island from Rock Harbor out to McCargoe Cove and back...and a bunch of interesting places in between.
Day 7 - The small building pictured here is one of the original cabins of the Rock Harbor Lodge. A nearby sign stated when the lodge opened in the early 1900's you could get a weeks lodging, canoe rental, and three square meals for $25. Beats todays $300 per night(canoe rental and meals extra)!
Day 7 - The first tourists to visit Isle Royale arrived on the MV America at this dock. This is a lifeboat from that ship.
Day 7 - Another shot of the original MV America dock, across the harbor from the present day park service dock. Rock Harbor.
Day 7 - A final shot of the Isle Royale shore. I took this just below our shelter before leaving to get on the boat.
Day 7 - The rocky entrance to Rock Harbor.
Day 7 - The Copper Harbor Light welcomes us back to civilization, such as it is at Copper Harbor, Michigan. It already all seemed like a dream and it was gonna take some time to get used to real life again. I'll be back someday....
