This is the hike I had been dreaming of my whole life. I hope these albums capture in some way the beauty of this unique place and the love that I quickly developed for it. The seven day hike took us around the eastern half of the island from Rock Harbor out to McCargoe Cove and back...and a bunch of interesting places in between.
Day 2 - Mt. Ojibway (view SW) - Sargent Lake is the lake visible here. Much of the lake is hidden by the surrounding ridges.
Day 2 - Mt. Ojibway (view SSW) - Lakes Ojibway (near) and Benson (far) are visible in this view of Isle Royale's interior from Mt. Ojibway.
Day 2 - The view from the tower on Mt. Ojibway looking back up the ridge we just travelled, towards Mt. Franklin (not visible).
Day 2 - Looking down to those hot, heavy packs...
Day 2 - The upper deck of the tower is off-limits but a Ranger happened to stop by to check equiptment while we were there and allowed us up. This was easily one of my favorite places on Isle Royale. The view behind me is to the SW. Beautiful!
Day 2 - A typical forest scene along the Mt. Ojibway Trail
Day 2 - The breeze was quite refreshing down by the lake. We spent quite a bit of time just sitting out on the dock. The cool breeze kept us from jumping in the even cooler water.
Day 2 - Alas, we had to continue on. Heading down to Daisy Farm camp we followed the Mt. Ojibway Trail. About a mile from the summit you cross Ransom Hill which gives you a couple glances back to Mt. Ojibway.
Day 2 - As we neared Daisy Farm Campground the forest closed in on us. We were looking foreward to dinner and maybe a refreshing dip in Lake Superior.
Day 2 - The Historic Edisen Fishery is a working re-creation of what once was a thriving fishery on Isle Royale. You can see the buildings directly across the harbor from Daisy Farm. Unfortunately, you need to take a private boat, canoe, or water taxi from Rock Harbor to get there.
