This is the hike I had been dreaming of my whole life. I hope these albums capture in some way the beauty of this unique place and the love that I quickly developed for it. The seven day hike took us around the eastern half of the island from Rock Harbor out to McCargoe Cove and back...and a bunch of interesting places in between.
Day 2 - Looking up Rock Harbor from the dock at Daisy Farm. Day Two
Day 2 - We lucked out and got a shelter at this otherwise busy campground. Daisy Farm is the largest and busiest camp on the island but was barely half full the night we camped here.
Day 3 - You cross this large marsh about halfway between Daisy Farm and the Greenstone Ridge.
Day 3 - We learned quickly on Isle Royale you must always watch your step. Rocky terrain demands your attention but so does this seemingly easy, flat boardwalk. Barely 8 inches wide, one misstep with a 40 pound pack would put you in a world of hurt.
Day 3 - Just before our third ascent of the Greenstone Ridge we took a break next to this scenic pond. To me this is a classic northwoods shot.
Day 3 - We headed towards the Greenstone Ridge again, this time via the Daisy Farm Trail.
Day 3 - Just because we had done it twice already didn't make the third climb up the Greenstone Ridge any easier. The nice thing is the Greenstone rewards you with beauty in all directions.
Day 3 - Angleworm Lake parallels the Greenstone Ridge for 3 miles but it is hidden the majority of the way. This is a rare glimpse.
Day 3 - When you drop off the Greenstone Ridge you almost literally "drop off" it. We were headed towards the East Chickenbone Trail to McCargoe Cove.
Day 3 - The third day on Isle Royale was the warmest of the week. Water was also scarce for the first 6 miles of trail. We were all out of water by the time we got to Chickenbone Lake for a refill.
