Thompson Harbor, located east of Rogers City, is one of those rare undeveloped jewels of the Michigan State Park system. Formerly a busy shipping harbor, Thompson's Harbor has now been completely reclaimed by nature. It's a wonder that I hadn't visited this place yet as it has quite a reputation for its wildflower displays in the spring.
I had, in fact, been eyeing this place for a hike since the beginning of winter and had been waiting for a nice clear day to visit. Alas, clear winter days in northern Michigan are fleeting and I felt I had waited long enough. Of the 6 miles of trails in the park I covered about 4 on this loop. Despite the clouds, I managed to have a rather good time...
The route and highlights...
The flashy entrance to Thompson Harbor...
The park road wasn't plowed but our current snow drought allowed 4WD access...
About 100 yards in was this bench...if anyone needs a break after 100 yards they should just head back to the car...
Rabbit tracks following the trail...
Just about a half-mile from the trailhead the path reaches the Huron shore. From here I was heading right towards the Grand Lake Outlet...
What looks like a large bay on the trail map looks like a big field to me...might help me save some time by cutting across it later...
The cedar lined trail out to Grand Lake Outlet...
