The homestead of John Oliver who built this house in 1826 and his family owned it until the park took over 120 years later.

Primitive Baptist Church - ca.1887
This church replaced the original log structure that stood here from 1827 to 1887. The church closed during the Civil War because the congregation was Unionist and did not feel safe.

Civil War Grave
The Primitive Baptist Church closed during the Civil War because of its Pro-Union sentiments. Apparently their fears were well founded as shown by this grave.

Revolutionary War Soldier
Some of the graves behind the Primitive Baptist Church are very old. This one is of William Hamby, a Revolutionary War veteren who died in 1840.

Methodist Church - ca.1902
The original Methodist Church was a log structure built in the 1820's for $115. This one replaced it in 1902.

"New" Barn
This barn is one of the newer structures in Cades Cove, built during the 1930's near the Elijah Oliver Place. Even so, a sign outside warned to 'Keep Out' due to deterioration.

Springhouse - Elijah Oliver Place
Water had to be carried from this springhouse to wherever it was needed on the property. It is located in a small ravine about a hundred yards above the main house.

The Grist Mill is the only original structure in the Mill Area. It provided both lumber and crushed grain and corn.

Gregg-Cable House - ca.1879
This house was built by John Cable, owner of the nearby mill, in 1879. It originally stood off Forge Creek Road and was moved here in the 1940's.

Drive-Through Barn
This was the most common type of barn in this region. The drive-through center made the transfer of hay from wagon to loft easier.

Cantilever Barn
This cantilever barn, located across from the Tipton Place, is a cetnturies-old European design that uses counter-weighted beams to create the large overhangs. The shelter provided by these overhangs was used by livestock and for storing equiptment.

Carter Sheilds Cabin - ca.1910
Carter Shields was a Civil War veteran wounded at Shiloh. He bought this property in 1910 and lived here 11 years. This is the last property to tour along the Loop Road.
