Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > Crisp Point - Crisp Point, in recent years, has become famous among lighthouse buffs as one of America's most endagered lights. Operational in 1904, by 1996 the tower was in danger of toppling into the lake when it came under the protection of the Crisp Point Lighthouse Preservation Society. Since 1996 efforts have been made to stem lakeshore erosion, the tower has been painted and is now open to climb (summer), and the attached service room is being rebuilt.

Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > DeTour Reef, Northern Lake Huron
Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > Detroit Lighthouse Depot - Tucked along the Detroit riverfront just south of Belle Isle is one of the most important buildings on the Great Lakes...if you were a lightkeeper that is. The Detroit Light Depot was constructed between 1871 and 1874. It was one of 12 depots constructed across the country, one for each lighthouse district. All the supplies for all the lighthouses on the Great Lakes came from this building.
Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > Eagle Harbor - The current lighthouse is the second to stand on this cliff. The original, built in 1850-51 served until 1870 when it was replaced due to deterioration. Construction of the current light began in 1871. The tower stands 44 feet high and housed a Fourth Order Fresnel lens. The distinctive white stripe was not added until 1925. The light is now open to the public along with a number of neighboring buildings during the summer.
Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > Eagle River - Activated in 1867 during the copper boom, the Eagle River light served for nearly fifty years, long after the copper boom had faded. It housed a Sixth Order Fresnel Lens and could be seen from 10 miles out. It was deactivated and sold to a private owner in 1908. It is currently a private residence and closed to the public.
Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > Fourteen Foot Shoal - Fourteen Foot Shoal marks a dangerous reef near the entrance to Cheboygan Harbor. The light was completed in 1930 and replaced the Old Cheyboygan Light. The nearest view from land is seen here, from Cheboygan Point within Cheboygan State Park.
Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > Grand Island Front Range - The Grand Island Range lights were constructed to aid shipping entering Munising Harbor from the west. The Rear Range light is one of the original lights, constructed in 1914. The Front Range light was constructed in 1968 to replace the old light which had finally succumbed to Lake Superior.
