Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > Mendota Channel (Bete Grise) - Completed in 1870, the lighthouse served until 1933 when it was abandoned and decomissioned. In 1996 the light was purchased privately and the owners worked to restore it. In 1998 the light entered service for the second time as an active aid to navigation.
Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > Middle Neebish Lighthouse - Middle Neebish is an all but unknown light sitting at the northern tip of Neebish Island in the St. Mary's River. The island is reached via a small ferry from the mainland at Barbeau. The light, constructed in 1907, has been neglected for years and it looks it. Not that this light would win any beauty pageants fresly painted though. The corroded steel tower sits about 150 yards back from the river right behind the newer steel range light built in 1993.

Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > Munising Front Range - The Munising Range lights were constructed in 1909 to replace the aging East Channel light on Grand Island. Though small in size, the high focal planes of these lights allowed them to be seen from a distance of 19 miles!

Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > North Manitou Shoal - North Manitou Shoal Light was built in 1935 and replaced an earlier light that stood on North Manitou Island itself. The lighthouse guards the narrow Manitou Passage between North and South Manitou, marking a dangeous shoal that has claimed many ships. This distant shot of the light was taken from the mainland at Pyramid Point.
Dan Weemhoff (dwhike) > Old Cheboygan Ruins - The Old Cheboygan Light was completed in 1851 and then rebuilt in 1859. The light was constructed in the popular schoolhouse design, with the tower atop a two-story dwelling. The station was fixed with Fifth Order lens and operated until 1930 when it was replaced by the nearby Fourteen Foot Shoal Light. The Coast Guard demolished the structure in the 1940's. Today the remains lie within Cheboygan State Park and a nice 1.5 mile trail leads out to the site.
