Old Baldy Hike Route Map

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore - Old Baldy

After nearly three months of below freezing weather I couldn't waste a day in the upper 30's indoors. I'd been wanting to get back out to Sleeping Bear but had been waiting for a clear day to do it. I almost got my wish...

Old Baldy sits just south of Empire and is technically a southern extension of the more well-known Empire Bluffs to the north. The trail had a nice mix of scenery as well as a bit of history. On the way to the dune the trail passes the Old Treat Farmstead, which dates back to the 1880's. The park service has maintained many of the original buildings though none are open to the public. After a bit of time on the farm I wandered over to Old Baldy for some dune climbing. The views over the open lake were, as always, beautiful as were the views inland once I reached the top. A nice spring-teaser hike...

Thanks for posting this. I've been up to the Treat Farm several times but never actually got up onto Old Baldy, let alone in Winter. Beautiful.
