It was a long time coming this year but the 2009-10 snow season had finally started. On this trip I was off to visit the so-called "jewel" of Kalkaska County. I thought I had visited all the "jewels" of Northern Michigan already so I was intrigued by what this small natural area had to offer. Located just east of Rapid River the preserve includes a wonderful variety of natural scenery. The Rapid River is fed by numerous tributaries at this location creating an interesting patchwork of interconnecting streams. Adjacent to the river is an old meadow from a long abandoned farmstead as well as a number of steep hillsides which provide some limited views. Time to kick off winter '09-10...
