Upper Tahquamenon Falls is Michigan's premier waterfall. Pick up any tourism pamphlet for the state and your likely to see its rust colored waters gracing it somewhere. Located in the 50,000-acre park which shares its name, the Upper Falls is a 50' free-falling cascade of remarkable beauty. The unique hue of its waters, often compared to a frothy Coca-Cola, is the result of the high level of tannic acid it contains which it picks up on its journey through the expansive cedar swamps of the eastern U.P.
The falls are a special place to me personally. During my many years living in Northern Michigan it was something of a tradition for me to travel to the falls with my two young boys each spring. It was therefore a foregone conclusion that on this trip, the first we had made to Upper Michigan since moving south three years prior, we would return. This particular April we had the good fortune to still find a healthy snowpack, only recently starting to melt, covering the surrounding woodlands. This meant that the Upper Falls would be showcasing their highest flow of the year creating a truly spectacular sight. So, come on along with us as we visit an old familiar friend...the Upper Falls of the Tahquamenon River...
