Backbone Mountain (3,360') is a bit of an odd highpoint. First off, even though it marks the highpoint of Maryland the trailhead for the peak is in West Virginia. Secondly, the highpoint does not actually mark the summit of Backbone Mountain itself but rather a high, east-facing shoulder. This was our second highpoint of the day and I knew with 700' of elevation to be gained over 1.5 miles that the kids were going to get tired quickly. Luckily I have two tough little guys and they made it up and down all smiles. The weather even co-operated for the second time this day so it was an altogether enjoyable outing...
