Covered Bridge Trail

DuPont State Forest - Grassy Creek Falls

I'm ever so slowly knocking off major natural attractions at DuPont State Forest.  This quick after-work visit to Grassy Creek Falls marks the last major waterfall I had yet to visit in the forest.  Tucked into the center of DuPont, access to Grassy Creek is via the trailheads to the wildly popular Triple and High Falls, two massive waterfalls where most people are happy to stop and turn around.  Thus, Grassy Creek Falls only gets a fraction of the visitation that its much larger neighbors receive.  On this early winter day I only saw a handful of other people during my hike, unusual for any time of year at DuPont.

Three trailheads provide access to Grassy Creek Falls:  Lake Imaging, Hooker Falls, and High Falls.  I decided on the High Falls access point as it was the most direct, would allow for a quick stop by High Falls itself, and I'd be provided the opportunity to check out the new-ish State Forest visitor center I had yet to visit.  My 3-mile round-trip hike would begin on the High Falls trail with a quick side trip to see that largest of DuPont waterfalls.  I'd then follow the Covered Bridge Trail a short distance to its namesake crossing of the Little River above the brink of High Falls.  Then I'd follow Buck Forest Road for a bit under a mile to its crossing of Grassy Creek where I'd make a left for a very short walk along Lake Imaging Road.  A couple minutes up Lake Imaging I made a left onto the Grassy Creek Falls trail which quickly deposited me at the brink of the falls itself.  This was a very easy hike, by Dupont and mountain standards both.  One that could be done by pretty much anyone with a couple hours to spare.  Though its certainly not the most spectacular cascade in DuPont I found Grassy Creek Falls to be a pleasant place to visit, especially for such minimal effort.  Coma on along with me and see what I discovered...
