My section hike along the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, from the Pisgah Inn to Bent Creek Gap, as tracked by the Gaia GPS app...
Pisgah Inn Trailhead (Mountains-to-Sea Trail) -- 4,950'
Starting out...a large sign displaying the trail system around Mount Pisgah sits alongside the MST as it departs the parking lot...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 4,970'
The wide trail begins with a moderate climb...notice the lights alongside the trail...this is because the MST also provides access to the living quarters of employees at the Pisgah Inn (seen in the next shot)...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 5,000'
Passing by the aforementioned Pisgah Inn employee living quarters...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 5,030'
I was now climbing along the upper end of Thompson Ridge, heading towards Little Bald Mountain...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 5,050'
Little Bald Mountain (5,285') pokes its head above the shrubs as the trail skirts right along the edge of the ridge...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 5,070'
A small gap in the brush to my right provided the first vista of the day. Morning fog still covers the valley far below, with the south ridge of Little Bald Mountain in the foreground...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 5,100'
Thankfully the MST doesn't bother with heading directly over the wooded summit of Little Bald Mountain but rather skirts it just to the west...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 5,080'
After passing Little Bald Mountain the trail begins a gentle descent towards Buck Spring Gap...
Mountains-to-Sea/Pilot Rock Trail Junction -- 5,060'
At the 2/3 mile mark I passed my first trail junction, with the Pilot Rock Trail which heads south down the ridge seen from the vista a few shots back...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 5,000'
My surroundings were really thickening up at this point...
Mountains-to-Sea/Laurel Mountain Trail Junction -- 4,960'
At just over 3/4-miles I passed the upper end of the Laurel Mountain Trail, which departs east along its namesake ridge towards Yellow Gap...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 4,980'
Beyond the Laurel Mountain Trail I was once again right along the edge of the ridge beneath a beautiful canopy of mountain laurel...
Buck Spring Lodge Site -- 5,000'
After a mile of hiking I arrived at the site of George Vanderbilt's Buck Spring Lodge. Buck Spring served as a hunting retreat for Vanderbilt and his guests and was connected to the Biltmore Estate by a road he also built. Today this small bit of foundation is all that remains of the lodge...
Buck Spring Lodge Site -- 5,000'
The large open field alongside the trail is where the Buck Spring Lodge once stood...as you can see, nothing remains of it anymore...
Buck Spring Lodge Site -- 5,000'
Though the lodge is gone, the view which Vanderbilt and his guests enjoyed still remains...From here one looks down the valley of Big Creek with the Laurel Mountain ridgeline and Little Bald Mountain (5,285') sweeping down on the right...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 5,000'
ANother peek through the trees allows for a more direct view down the deep valley of Big Creek...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail -- 5,000'
Looking down the short, well-worn section of trail between the lodge site and Buck Spring Gap...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail @ Buck Spring Gap Overlook -- 4,980'
A look back at the point where the Mountains-to-Sea Trail emerges from the west at Buck Spring Gap...as you can see, according to the sign, I'd made it a mile thus-far...
Buck Spring Gap Overlook -- 4,980'
The Buck Spring (not sure why the NPS added the 'S') Gap Overlook, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway, offers similar views as from the lodge site but at an angle which looks directly into the sun in the early morning...which is why this is the only shot I took from here...
Buck Spring Gap Overlook -- 4,980'
Across the parking area at the gap I was also afforded this nice look at the conical summit of nearby Mount Pisgah (5,721')...
Mountains-to-Sea Trail @ Buck Spring Gap Overlook -- 4,980'
Heading back into the trees for a short time once more...this is the MST as it departs from Buck Spring Gap eastbound...
