Cowee Bald (Conleys Creek Road)
My approach to Cowee Bald took me up the pretty valley of Conleys Creek, which was just beginning to show some spring green. At the head of the valley is Cowee Bald (4,944') itself...
Cowee Bald Trailhead (F.R. 70) -- 4,810'
The drive up Forest Service Road 70 from the Franklin area is no joke. I seriously wouldn't attempt it in a vehicle lacking decent clearance and 4-wheel drive. The road is steep and in places eroded and there are two streams to ford as well. Take this into consideration before you head out...
Cowee Bald Trailhead (F.R. 70) -- 4,810'
The half-mile hike to the tower begins from a wide pull-off at the bend in the road just below the metal gate seen in the following shot...
Forest Service Road 70 -- 4,820'
There's no actual trail to the summit of Cowee Bald, rather you just need to walk the gated forest road to the top...
Forest Service Road 70 -- 4,840'
First impressions of this gated portion of the forest road is that it sees a decent amount of vehicle traffic. No doubt the slew of towers at the summit require frequent attention...
Forest Service Road 70 -- 4,860'
The well-graded road ascends at a steady, but not difficult, rate...
Forest Service Road 70 -- 4,860'
Thanks to the still-bare treetops I was afforded fleeting glimpses of the surrounding peaks...
Forest Service Road 70 -- 4,870'
A break in the trees provided an almost unobstructed view of the massive Plott Balsam Range, topped by Waterrock Knob (6,292'), to the northeast...

The road as it nears the summit...
Forest Service Road 70 -- 4,900'
Before long modern antennae were poking above the trees just ahead...
Forest Service Road 70 -- 4,920'
My surroundings, as the road arrived at the summit, definitely left something to be desired...
Forest Service Road 70 -- 4,940'
What must have been over a dozen modern towers crowded the summit...the lookout tower could bee seen just ahead though...
Cowee Bald Lookout Tower -- 4,944'
Arriving at the Cowee Bald Lookout Tower, which sits all by itself at the southeastern end of the summit ridge...
Cowee Bald Lookout Tower -- 4,944'
The 30' tower which sits atop Cowee Bald was built in 1933 and, as you can see, has been maintained superbly over the years. It includes a live-in cab atop the tower, and was actively used to spot fires until the mid-1990's. The trap door to the catwalk is usually locked (or so I am told) but, happily, was not on the day I visited...
Cowee Bald Lookout Tower -- 4,944'
Looking east down the manway below the tower. Below are the valleys of Greens Creek and the Tuckasegee River. Beyond rise the 6,000+' peaks of the Great Balsam Mountains...

Cowee Bald Lookout Tower -- 4,944'
Let's go up, shall we?
Cowee Bald Lookout Tower -- 4,944'
I was pleasantly surprised to find the heavy trap door at the top of the stairs unlocked. Eagerly I climbed up onto the catwalk...
Cowee Bald Lookout Tower -- 4,944'
Looking south from the catwalk the view was slightly restricted by the surrounding forest. Still, the countless ridges and valleys stretching all the way to the horizon was stunning. Somewhere out there, tucked deep in one of those valleys, is the town of Franklin...
Cowee Bald Lookout Tower -- 4,944'
Looking east I was once again facing the broad valley of the Tuckasegee River. Somewhere out there is the college town of Cullowhee while the dark ramparts of the Great Balsam Range dominate the horizon...
Cowee Bald Lookout Tower -- 4,944'
The full panorama east, overlooking the Tuckasegee River valley. The Great Balsam Range is straight ahead, the Plott Balsam Range is seen to the left...
