Panther Top Mountain -- 2,293'
Erected in 1940 the 40' tower on Panther Top remained in service as recently as only ten years ago. Today it remains in excellent condition and the steps are open for visitors to climb. The cab is closed most times but on a few select weekends each year it is open as well...I was soon to find out that I had chosen to visit on just such a weekend...

Panther Top Lookout Tower -- 2,293'
I waited for about a half hour at the summit in the vain hope the clouds might lift. They didn't but, just before I left, a man in a pickup suddenly arrived at the summit. To my surprise he informed me that this was one of the weekends which the summit road and upper cab would be open to the public. I immediately decided that I'd have to make the drive back up later on in the day when things had cleared. After lunch, as you can see, conditions had improved dramatically...

A kindly volunteer was happy to share a bit of history of the tower and let me look around inside. It is immediately apparent that this historic structure has been cared for with great dedication as it is in almost pristine shape...

on June 1, 2019Thanks for your thorough documentation and narration about Panther Top! We bought a cabin in Murphy last year off Ranger RD about 10 minutes away, and for several months did not know that the tower existed.
We hiked it about a month ago on a beautiful sunny day, with no one in sight but my wife and I. It was a highlight of our Spring!
Thanks again for your efforts and for sharing!
