You can see here again how the fire wasn't nearly as damaging as I initially thought it might have been. Few trees exceeding 10-inches in diameter had burns scars of any kind on them meaning the fire which swept through here was either of low intensity, moving quickly, or both...

Immediately ahead at the point where the A.T. gains the summit ridge is a nice opening in the forest with a spectacular view to the northeast. In the foreground is DeHart Bald (4,171'). If you enlarge the photo and look at the ridgeline to the left of the summit you can see a fairly severe burn scar...
Wesser Bald Summit Spur -- 4,620'
I had been able to see through the trees from below that the fire tower had, indeed, survived. My worry was though that its lower wooden steps might still have burned keeping me from making the climb. As I approached via the summit ridge, however, I was encouraged by what I saw...
Wesser Bald -- 4,627'
Indeed, the Wesser Bald Fire Tower had escaped the fire all but unscathed. I looked a bit for any visible damage but could nary find even a hint of charred concrete. The clearing surrounding it must have been enough to keep what must have been a very low-intensity fire at this point from touching it...
Wesser Bald -- 4,627'
Looking a bot more easterly I could see all the way down to the Little Tennessee River Valley. The haze hanging over the valley is smoke but, thankfully, not from wildfires for a change. Rather its from dozens of wood-burning stoves heating nearby homes on this chilly morning...
Wesser Bald -- 4,627'
The full 180-degree western panorama from the lookout tower. Tellico Peak (5,125') is the near peak to the extreme left while the broad ridge of Cheoah Bald (5,062') is in the middle-distance to the far right. The high ranges on the far horizon are, from left to right, the Unicoi Mountains and the Great Smoky Mountain Range...
Wesser Bald -- 4,627'
The northeast-to-south panorama from the lookout tower. The near peak to the left is that of DeHart Bald (4,171') while the pointed peak on the extreme right is that of Tellico Bald (5,125'). The highest peaks in the very, very far distance are those of the Great Balsam Range...
Wesser Bald Service Road -- 3,900'
Before I knew it I had arrived back at Tellico Road. Though the damage to the forest was tough to see it had been, to my eyes, much less disturbing to the mountain than I had previously worried it might have been. Rains will quickly wash the charred soil clean and spring greens will quickly cover whatever is left in a few short months. All things considered it could have been much, much worse here and for that I am immensely thankful...
