The 40' lookout tower atop Flat Top Mountain was built in 1954 and is open for hikers year-round. The modern structure replaced an earlier one dating to 1900. As far as I could see from the bottom the tower is well-maintained and sturdy, which I appreciated as this was a very windy day...

The view to the southwest from the top of the lookout...Grandfather Mountain (5,964') is on the left with Beech Mountain (5,506') on the right. Sugar Mountain (5,240') can be seen left of center adorned with its horrific summit high-rise. A panorama of the view north from the top of the lookout...in the center you can make out the downtown of nearby Boone while, in the distance, many famous Amphibolite Range peaks can be identified. Snake Mountain (5,518') and Elk Knob (5,555') are the most easily seen, rising directly above Boone in the shot, to the left and right respectively...

Zooming in a bit more to the northeast I was now looking into the heart of beautiful Ashe County. I believe the bald summit to the left to be Old Field Bald (4,958'). That would mean to the right is distant Pond Mountain (4,980'), then the jagged crest of Three Top Mountain (5,100'), and on the far right Mount Jefferson (4,683')...

Being an early morning hike the panorama east and southeast was problematic to picture due to the low sun angle. You can make out the hazy foothills of the Piedmont as well as US-321 as I drops off the ridge on the left. The fields to the right are those surrounding the Cone Cemetery which I had passed on my way up here...

The incredible clarity of the air this crisp morning can be seen in the tightly zoomed shot to the southwest. Easily seen is the iconic pointed summit of Table Rock (4,100') and its nearby neighbor Hawksbill Mountain (4,020') on the eastern rim of Linville Gorge. In the far distance on the extreme right the profile of the Black Mountain Range, highest in the Eastern U.S., is easily seen as well...
