From the summit tower looking south the park road winds its way around the southern peaks of the Black Mountains. Above the point where the road disappears in the distance is the barely discernible summit of Mount Hallback (6,391'). Beyond that rises Mount Gibbes (6,571) and then the summit towers of Clingmans Peak (6,581')...
Mount Mitchell Summit - 6,684'
To the north, beyond the summit parking area, the highest peaks of the Black Mountains are seen. Mount Craig (6,648') rises just beyond the lot with Balsam Cone (6,596') just to its right. Beyond Mount Craig to the left is the pointy summit of Winter Star Mountain (6,203'), the northernmost 6K'er in the Blacks...
Mount Mitchell Summit - Elisha Mitchell Grave - 6,684'
Adjacent to the summit tower is the gravesite of the mountain's namesake, Dr. Elisha Mitchell. Dr. Mitchell, through a geographical survey he conducted in 1828, was the first to declare that this Black Mountain peak was the highest in the state (previous studies had presumed Grandfather Mountain to the north was the highest). He took numerous trips to the peaks of the region until, in 1857, he fell off a waterfall and died while exploring the mountain. In 1882 the USGS renamed the peak in his honor and he was interred at its summit...
Summit Trail - 6,620'
Before hitting the trail back to the car we decided to make a quick side trip over to the summit visitor center and museum. The center has some really interesting, interactive displays describing the Black Mountains and offers the chance to pick up a souvenir if you're so inclined...
Old Mitchell Trail - 6,180'
Finding this tree came as a bit of a shock. I knew it couldn't be anything but a Paper Birch but that was confusing as I was nearly as certain that they aren't found this far south. Only through a bit of follow-up research did I discover that a subspecies called Mountain Paper Birch (Betula cordifolia) is indeed a rare but native tree on the mountain. I love it when nature reveals new things!!
Old Mitchell Trail - 6,300'
Although I wasn't looking to bag it today, Mount Hallback is included on the South Beyond 6,000' list I'm trying to complete. Its only a short bushwhack off the main trail to reach the summit but I'm planning on completing it in the future in conjunction with Mount Gibbes to the south...
