Linville Falls, Burke County (2-3-13)
Arguably the most popular waterfall in North Carolina (Looking Glass Falls to the south being the other), Linville Falls is neither the highest or the widest falls in the state but what it lacks in size it makes up for in shear, roaring power. Located a short hike off the Blue Ridge Parkway, Linville Falls marks the entrance of the Linville River into the mighty wilderness gorge which also bears the same name.
And what an entrance it is!!
Over a hundred feet wide above the falls, the river crashes through a cleft in the cliffs barely ten feet wide, erupting into a wide, deep pool with amazing force. There are no less than five developed overlooks above the falls, each with their own unique perspective and one would be hard pressed to pick the best one. My personal favorite (other than hiking down to the plunge pool itself), is the Plunge Pool Overlook. The closest of the viewpoints to the parking area, it was a perfect option on a cool, snowy day like this one. In all it was a wonderfully wintery one-mile round trip I wont soon forget...
