Little Devils Tower (5-6-11)
Little Devils Tower is a high rocky summit in the Black Elk Wilderness of South Dakota's Black Hills. Rising to an elevation of 6,971' it's not the highest peak in the area, but it's close...and its position on the south side of the range with Harney Peak to the north and the famed Cathedral Spires to the east provide it with what I'm sure is one of the finest views in the Black Hills.
This hike was unplanned but, with a couple extra hours to burn, I found myself unable to pass up the opportunity to climb a Black Hills peak. Starting from the small parking area a mile or so above Sylvan Lake on the Needles Highway, we made our way up Trail #4 (a popular route up Harney Peak) and the summit spur about 1.5 miles to the top. I expected views, but was unprepared for what I actually got...after all, this was my first Black Hills summit!
