Arches National Park -- Landscape Arch (4-21-17)
Read MorePark Avenue -- 4,540'
One of the first pull-offs along the park road is here, at Park Avenue. This is the view from the overlook where you look down a deep valley lined on both sides by huge red pillars of sandstone. There's a trail that runs down the length of the valley which is supposed to be quite scenic...
Fiery Furnace -- 4,750'
The Fiery Furnace, located on the northern shoulder of the Salt Valley, is an area of jumbled rocks, slot canyons, and hoodoo-type rock formations. Much coveted tickets are required to enter the Furnace so for those of us not fortunate to be able to explore further this is the view seen from the road...
Devil's Garden Trailhead -- 5,220'
Seventeen miles north of the Visitor Center the park road ends at the Devil's Garden Trailhead, seen here. From this point a well-travelled path leads north among the rock fins and spires of the Garden itself. It's only a short walk from here to Landscape Arch but longer hikes can be had into the rugged heart of the Garden if you have the stamina and the time...
Devil's Garden Trail-Pine Tree/Tunnel Arch Spur Junction -- 5,200'
Passing the side path to Pine Tree and Tunnel Arch. We would have loved to make the walk over to see them but, as it was, we were already having to practically run this hike due to lack of time so unfortunately we had to pass on by...
Landscape Arch -- 5,220'
At over 290-feet in length, Landscape Arch is the longest arch in the National Park and the fifth longest on the planet. With a width barely exceeding six feet at its thinnest the massive arch seems almost to defy the laws of physics and presents itself as being impossibly delicate. In fact there is some argument regarding how imminent the collapse of Landscape Arch might be. In the 1990's two massive slabs of rock broke off forcing the closure of the trail beneath it. It is unclear whether these collapses weakened or rather strengthened the arch by shedding weight. Regardless, Landscape Arch is a magnificent and graceful wonder of nature and we felt privileged to have been able to witness its beauty...
Devil's Garden Trail -- 5,230'
Of course, we had to get as close as possible to the arch so we continued on for a few hundred yards more. Here, you can see the side path breaking left to the closer viewpoint of the arch as well as numerous hikers in the distance climbing the slickrock into the heart of Devil's Garden...
