Read MoreGrand Wash -- 5,580'
About three-and-a-half miles south of the visitor center, on Scenic Drive, a gravel road breaks east into a nearby canyon. This is the road through Grand Wash. At about a mile-and-a-half in length, the road is suitable for the average car though at times of heavy rain it should be avoided as it frequently washes over...
Grand Wash (Uranium Mines) -- 5,580'
Immediately after turning onto Grand Wash Road our attention was drawn to a couple small holes dug into the base of the adjacent cliff. Believe it or not these are historic uranium mines dug in the early to mid-20th Century. When the park was created, and then expanded, many of these old mines were shut down. Today they are off-limits to visitors as radiation in the old shafts can understandably be quite dangerous...
Scenic Drive -- Slick Rock Divide -- 6,000'
Looking south from the highpoint of Scenic Drive the late day sun was bathing much of the Waterpocket Fold (the broken ridge which defines Capitol Reef) in glowing light. At the same time a thunderstorm darkens the northern reaches of the park in the far distance...

Capitol Gorge -- 5,660'
Two road split from the south end of Scenic Drive. South Draw Road, suitable only for 4X4 vehicles, continues south while the dirt road into Capitol Gorge heads east. Like the Grand Wash Road earlier, the road into Capitol Gorge is about 2.5-miles in length and is suitable for cars though it is quite rough...
Capitol Gorge -- 5,460'
About two-and-a-half miles from Scenic Drive the Capitol Gorge Road dead ends at a large parking lot and trailhead. From here, with more time than we had this visit, one can follow what is reputedly a fantastic trail up into the narrows of the gorge. It was here that I most regretted not being able to get out and explore Capitol Reef on foot...
Scenic Drive -- 5,600'
It is moments like this that will most vividly be burned into my memory after this trip is long over and finished. It is places like this which will keep me dreaming of my next trip west and, if I have anything to say about it, Capitol Reef National Park is going to be on the docket for a return visit...
