As you can see Fort Branch is situated on very high ground in relation to the river. In addition, being on the outside of a wide river bend meant that enemy gunboats were forced to come within range of the forts massive guns if they wished to attack it...
Located just about at the forts midway point there is this interesting spot where the earthworks protecting one of the riverside gun positions extends inward to just about join with its counterpart landward position. This effectively splits the fort into two parts. I haven't been able to figure out what the thought process was in creating this design...
