Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum

Patriots Point Naval & Maritime Museum, located on the east shore of the Cooper River across the harbor from Charleston, is one of the most fascinating museums dedicated to modern military history that I've ever visited. The site houses three museum ships, the Congressional Medal of Honor Museum, Cold War Submarine Memorial, and a replica Vietnam War Naval Support Base. The centerpieces of the park, though, are the three World War 2 / Cold War Era warships, the destroyer U.S.S. Laffey, the submarine U.S.S. Clamagore, and the carrier U.S.S. Yorktown. Each of these ships have been preserved and opened to the public who have the unique opportunity to explore just about every nook and cranny of these venerable old craft. In addition, aboard the Yorktown is an impressive collection of aircraft dating from World War 2 to the modern day. This album pretty much takes you on a room-by-room tour of the three ships as well as a quick stop by the Vietnam Naval Support Base. Though not the most visually stunning album I've put up on this site, I think that any fan of modern military history will share my appreciation for the care and detail that has been put into these old ships. It's almost as if the crew stepped off for the day before your visit. It's incredibly immersive. Needless to say, if you're in the Charleston area and you want a fascinating and educational way to spend your day, Patriots Point shouldn't be missed. Come and take a look around with me...
