Allen M. Sumner-class destroyer which served from 1944 to 1975. She is 376.5' long and displaces 2,200 tons. The Laffey is the second destroyer to bear the name, her predecessor being sunk in 1942. Nicknamed "The Ship the Would Not Die," the Laffey took part in the Normandy Invasion in 1944 and numerous operations in the Pacific Theater. Her most trying hour occurred on April 15, 1945 when she was attacked by some 50 Japanese bombers and kamikaze. Despite being struck by four bombs and six kamikaze's which caused some 103 casualties the Laffey defiantly remained afloat and served through the end of the war. The Laffey arrived at Patriots Point in 1981.
