I thought the style of the visitor center to be a bit unconventional, it doesn't really evoke a sense of the Revolutionary period. Outer looks aside, it is a great place to get familiar with the park and the events that occurred here. It houses a number of period artifacts, a gift shop, and most other things you would associate with a National Park visitor center...
During the winter Washington's army was camped here the surrounding woodlands were quickly cleared for shelter, heating, and cooking purposes. The clearing of the forests provided wide fields of fire for guns atop the ridges should the British be foolish enough to attempt an attack. You can usually tell the importance of a site by the size of its monuments, and Valley Forge is no exception. The massive arch sits atop one of the parks higher hills near the south end of the original defenses. It was dedicated in 1917 to "honor General Washington and the brave men who endured the winter encampment at Valley Forge in 1777-1778."
